What Makes the Annapurna Circuit with Nar Phu Valley Trek Special

Combining the Annapurna Circuit with the remote Nar Phu Valley creates an ultimate Himalayan expedition, blending famous high-altitude trails with a restricted, medieval Tibetan world.

  • Step into medieval stone settlements like Phu Gaon (4,080m) and Nar (4,110m), trans-Himalayan enclaves that remained entirely sealed off from outside visitors until 2002.
  • Visit historic spiritual centers, including the Tashi Lhakhang Gompa in Phu, established centuries ago by early Tibetan migrants.
  • Travel quiet, arid canyon paths shared primarily with local yak caravans rather than standard trekking crowds.
  • Cross this rugged, remote topographical divide linking Nar Village to the Manang Valley in Gandaki Province.
  • Rejoin the classic Annapurna Circuit to traverse one of the highest navigable mountain passes on Earth, dropping steeply into the sacred Mustang region.
  • Visit the sacred 3,800-meter pilgrimage oasis, renowned for its 108 water spouts and revered equally by Hindus and Buddhists.

Overview Of Annapurna Circuit with Nar Phu Valley Trek

Nar Phu Valley Trek is a remarkable journey in the Annapurna region that traverses through two notable remote villages. This trekking route is a new trekking trail and also off the beaten path. Not many are familiar with the journey; therefore, it offers a truly adventurous spirit. The trekking route boasts the rugged and exotic cultural and natural beauty of the valley. A journey to Nar Phu Valley is unlike any other trekking journey in Nepal. It is a wonderful journey that lets travelers find beauty in remoteness.

You leave the standard Annapurna route at Koto and head north directly into the isolated Nar Phu Valley. This restricted corridor leads you step by step through the high altitude villages of Meta, Phu, and Nar. The itinerary requires you to cross two major high-altitude mountain passes. First, you tackle the rugged Kang La Pass at approximately 5,320 meters. A few days later, you conquer the iconic Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters.

You will experience untouched medieval Tibetan villages and ancient Buddhist sanctuaries like the Tashi Lhakhang gompa. The path cuts through dramatic rock canyons before safely rejoining the main circuit at Ngawal and the active town of Manang.

The final leg of the trek descends past the sacred Muktinath Temple toward the windy outpost of Jomsom. From there, you travel back to the lakeside city of Pokhara.

Alternatives for Nar Phu Valley Trek

All in all, we wouldn’t advise Annapurna Nar Phu Valley trek to those who are keen on a remote environment. The accommodation on this trek is basic and simple. Teahouses are not as well-facilitated as in the other trekking trails of the Annapurna region. Likewise, it is difficult to have internet access daily as well.

So if you are looking for something remote yet want to be in touch with the world besides the place you are in, we would advise you to try Tilicho Lake, Manaslu Circuit Trek or Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Following breakfast, our group departs Kathmandu for an overland journey along the Trishuli River. The drive follows the paved highway through the transit junctions of Mugling and Dumre before reaching Besisahar, the administrative hub of Lamjung district. The tarmac ends at Besisahar, where you switch into a sturdy four-wheel-drive jeep to take on the rough, unpaved tracks carved into the Marsyangdi River gorge.

The off-road trail climbs beside canyon walls, leading past the tumbling cascades of Syange waterfall and the stone hamlets of Jagat and Chamje. You enter the Manang district at Tal (1,700 m), an unusual settlement set on a wide fluvial terrace that was once an ancient alpine lakebed. From Tal, the track follows the canyon to Dharapani. Historically an important stop along the Trans-Himalayan salt trade, this stone-paved village sits at the confluence of the Marsyangdi River and the Dudh Khola, where it also serves as the junction linking the Annapurna and Manaslu circuits

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Begin your trek alongside a guide from Majestic Trails Nepal, following the Marsyangdi River through forests of pine, hemlock, and fir. You soon arrive at Bagarchhap (2,160 m), where flat-roofed stone homes and mani prayer wheels mark your entry into Tibetan Buddhist settlements. Continuing past the apple orchards of Danakyu, tackle a steep stone staircase through oak and rhododendron forest up to Timang (2,750 m). This scenic ridge opens up to striking views of Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), Ngadi Chuli (Peak 29), and Annapurna II.

From Timang, the trail levels out toward the quiet farming village of Thanchok, where locals cultivate terraced fields of buckwheat and potatoes. A gradual descent brings you to Koto (2,600 m), located right at the confluence of the Marsyangdi River and the rugged Nar Khola gorge. As the official gateway to the Nar Phu Valley, Koto hosts the police and immigration checkpoint where your guide registers your Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and ACAP documents before you head into the wild valley tomorrow.

Leave the Annapurna Circuit behind as your guide clears permits at the Koto police checkpost to enter the restricted Nar Phu Valley. The path cuts into the sheer granite canyon of the Nar Khola, leading through forests of pine and bamboo, over suspension bridges, and past cascades that spray directly across the trail. Along this ancient Tibetan salt trade route, you will pass Hulaki Odar (Postman Cave), a wide rock shelter historically used by high-altitude caravans to protect yaks from sudden storms.

Beyond the rest stop of Dharmasala, the canyon widens and the greenery yields to sparse alpine scrub. A sustained switchback climb lifts you past the treeline onto the high, windswept plateau of Meta (3,560 m). This ancient seasonal settlement introduces you to the dry Tibetan landscape, offering panoramic views of Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal.

Setting out from the high terrace of Meta Valley, follow the contours of the Phu Khola into an arid, trans-Himalayan gorge. The path initially descends before settling into an undulating climb beneath the glaciated peaks of Pokhar Kang, Amotsang Himal, and Kang Guru (6,981 m). Along the barren trail, pass through the seasonal desert settlements of Chyakhu and Kyang. Here, the crumbling stone masonry of ruined dzongs (fortresses) highlights the valley's history as a mid-twentieth-century stronghold for Khampa guerrilla fighters.

Continuing past carved mani walls and ancient chortens, cross a suspension bridge suspended over the canyon depths. A brief, steep climb leads to the whitewashed entrance gate (kani) of Phu Gaon, an ancient settlement of stone houses stacked directly into the hillside. Later in the afternoon, visit Tashi Lhakhang Gompa, an active monastery steeped in Karma Kagyu Tibetan Buddhist tradition for more than 300 years.

Descend along the banks of the Phu Khola, retracing your path through the arid gorge past seasonal ruins and desert terraces

The topographical highlight of the day occurs at Mahendra Pul. Here, you cross a steel suspension bridge suspended directly over an 80-meter-deep, incredibly narrow rock canyon where the river violently channels through the limestone. Following a steep physical push beyond the bridge, the trail arrives at Nar Phedi.

Instead of a standard teahouse, tonight offers a rare cultural immersion. You will lodge directly within the Nar Phedi Monastery, an active sanctuary managed entirely by a resident order of Buddhist nuns. During the late afternoon, you are welcome to sit in the main gompa to observe their evening puja (prayers). The nuns also prepare a traditional, home-cooked communal dinner for the visiting trekkers.

If you wish, you can offer a small donation to light traditional butter lamps in the main prayer hall, adding a profound spiritual dimension to the physical journey.

Depart the monastic sanctuary of Nar Phedi on a short but steep winding climb out of the river gorge. The trail ascends switchbacks decorated with fluttering prayer flags and carved stone chortens, passing through the ancient ruins of Yughat. Passing under a traditional painted entrance archway (kani), you enter the wide alpine bowl of Nar Village, a medieval settlement terraced dramatically into the mountainside.

Nar is livelier and more compact than Phu, centered around active community gompas and centuries of Tibetan Buddhist heritage. Because today’s hike takes only two to three hours, you have the full afternoon to explore the traditional stone alleyways, watch villagers tend their high-altitude barley terraces, and properly rest ahead of tomorrow's demanding crossing of Kang La Pass.

Set out before dawn around 4:00 AM with headlamps, following the Temden Khola through the high grazing pastures of Jhombu Kharka. As the gradient steepens above 4,800 meters, the trail crosses frozen moraine and loose scree where steady, rhythmic pacing is essential. Cresting the prayer flags at Kang La Pass (5,320 m) opens up an expansive panorama across the Annapurna Massif, showcasing Annapurna II, Annapurna IV, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak above the Manang basin.

The descent off the pass drops steeply over loose scree slopes, where trekking poles provide vital stability, before leveling out into open alpine meadows. Descending roughly 1,660 vertical meters into the upper Marsyangdi valley brings you directly into the historic settlement of Ngawal. Here, the trail reconnects with the Annapurna Circuit high route, welcoming you with traditional stone architecture, a hilltop gompa, and well-equipped teahouses for the night.

Descend from Ngawal toward the broad, arid valley floor of Manang on a short walk that serves as active recovery after crossing Kang La Pass. The path winds through juniper scrub and pine woods beneath the ice faces of Annapurna III (7,555 m) and Gangapurna (7,455 m). Along the trail, pass Sher Gompa and the Gompa of Godzo before reaching Braga (Braka), an ancient settlement of stone houses stacked against sheer limestone cliffs. Here, visit Braga Gompa, a 900-year-old Kagyu monastery noted for its historic murals and statues, with the steep side trail leading up to the eleventh-century Milarepa's Cave on the bluffs above.

A gentle walk across the Ghatte Khola brings you into Manang (3,540 m), the primary trekking hub of the Annapurna Circuit. With its fresh bakeries, teahouses, and Himalayan Rescue Association altitude clinic, the village provides the ideal setting to rest, acclimatize, and recharge before you begin the push toward Thorong La.

Today serves as a mandatory physiological rest day to synchronize your body with the dropping oxygen levels. Because ascending directly toward Thorong La Pass without pausing dramatically elevates the risk of acute mountain sickness, the expedition halts in Manang.

We operate on the fundamental alpine rule to climb high and sleep low. You can choose a moderate hike to Gangapurna Lake (3,800m), a striking turquoise basin formed by glacial meltwater, or push slightly higher to the Chongkor Viewpoint (3,900m). Both vantage points deliver unobstructed, panoramic vistas of the Gangapurna Glacier, Annapurna III, and Tilicho Peak. For trekkers possessing exceptional stamina, the rigorous ascent to Ice Lake (4,600m) provides the ultimate physiological preparation.

During the afternoon, the group will return to the village center. Manang functions as a vibrant commercial hub where you can sample fresh pastries at local bakeries or simply rest. Later, we will visit the Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) clinic. Every afternoon, international volunteer doctors conduct a comprehensive briefing on high altitude safety, which provides vital medical context before our final push upward.

The path begins in Manang village, crosses a creek, climbs to Tenki village above Manang, and then proceeds to ascend out of the Marshyangdi Valley, turning northwest up Jarsang Khola's valley. This valley is followed northward by the trail, which passes across a few pastures and a juniper tree scrub as it slowly gains altitude. The path continues to travel near Ghunsa, a small village with flat mud roofs just below the trailhead. The route then winds through meadows grazed by horses and yaks.

The trek route goes through an ancient old Mani wall in a pleasant meadow after crossing a small river via a wooden bridge before arriving at Yak Kharka, another small village. The trick to avoiding altitude issues is a gradual ascent.

Today features a short, gradual ascent along the Jarsang Khola valley toward Thorong Phedi, the primary base camp at the foot of Thorong La Pass.

The trail winds across open alpine terrain past the seasonal settlement of Ledar before descending to cross a suspension bridge over the glacial river. On the opposite side, the path climbs steadily and crosses an exposed scree area where maintaining a deliberate, single-file pace is essential.

While some trekkers push higher to High Camp at 4,925 meters, we advise spending the night at Thorong Phedi. Sleeping at 4,450 meters provides better oxygen levels and lowers the risk of altitude sickness, helping you rest properly before tomorrow's climb.

To avoid the severe afternoon winds, your group will depart Thorong Phedi well before dawn. The initial climb is incredibly steep, requiring a slow and steady pace through the freezing mountain air. As you get closer to the peak, the path becomes rougher and demands careful navigation across loose rocky ridges.

Reaching the prayer flags at the summit of Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters delivers an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. From this high vantage point, you will experience a stunning 360 degree panorama. Looking north, the dry landscape of the Tibetan plateau unfolds. When you look back, you can see massive Annapurna peaks and the deep canyon of the Kali Gandaki gorge.

Following a brief summit celebration, you face a massive 1,600 meter descent into the Mustang district. The trail drops sharply over loose gravel before finally leveling out at Muktinath. Sitting at 3,800 meters, this sacred mountain oasis is home to ethnic Tibetans and serves as a major pilgrimage site containing historic temples revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. You will rest here for the night in a comfortable local teahouse, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

Annapurna Circuit with Nar Phu Valley Trek– Trip Information & Details

Nar Phu Valley Trek is a remote trek that takes you to the secluded and alluring regions located in the north of Annapurna. Nar and Phu are two different remote villages known for preserving their exotic beauty and traditional cultures. The villages are heavily influenced by Buddhist culture; the trek route is adorned with Buddhist monuments. The trek route is strewn with prayer flags, chortens, Gumbas, Mani walls, and many more shrines that reflect the cultural influence in these villages.

The trail is a restricted trekking area in Nepal, the cultural and natural beauty of the valley is intact. Being a new trekking destination, it is a seldom-traveled route with a unique combination of high peaks and passes. This intriguing area offers a picture of glaciers, remote villages, narrow canyons, lovely forests, amazing rock formations, yaks, Gompas, and unique Himalayan cultures. Overall, the trek promises wilderness and the company of majestic mountain views along with stunning landscapes.

Although trekking to Nar Phu has not been long since its opening, voyagers have deeply fallen in love with the place. The trail entails passing through high pinnacles, mountain passes, and remote villages. Some of the notable villages on this journey are Manang, Nar, Phu, Meta, Koto, and a few others. Likewise, the trail includes passing through exquisite verdant forests and vast pasture lands.

Trekkers will be fascinated by the remote Tibetan towns with overlapping stone houses. Along with that, old Buddhist religious communities and a terrific view of the Annapurna Range are significant attractions of the journey. It is a unique journey that lets visitors experience far-off villages with awesome cultural backgrounds.

The Nar Phu Valley trek is graded as a strenuous hike. It takes you through the remote and less-explored Nar and Phu villages. The trek involves walking on rocky and uneven terrain. It requires you to cross high passes. It also makes you experience some challenging ascents and descents.

The adventure of the NarPhu Valley trek will test your physical limits and mental endurance. There's a high chance of altitude sickness at the highest point of the trek, at 5416 m. Hence, we have prepared the package with enough days to acclimatize your body. Although it is a tough hike, the effort is worth it when you witness stunning views from high altitudes of above 4,000 meters.

The best time for Nar Phu Valley Trek, combined with Annapurna Circuit Trek, is spring, monsoon, and autumn.

The spring season in Nepal falls from March to May. The weather during this time is calm and moderate. Days are sunny and warm, and nights are chilly. The flowers bloom and make the surroundings lively and colorful. Alongside, you can also opt for this trek during the monsoon season, which is from June to August. The trail lies in the rain shadow area, so it faces rare rainfall. People who cannot travel during the spring and autumn seasons can travel around these times.

Similarly, the autumn season, which tumbles from September to November, is when the sky is clearer than ever, and the mountain is shinier than ever. The weather around this time is also calm and moderate. The nights are chillier as it is also a pre-winter season, but days are warm and bright, perfect for walking. Additionally, it is one of the busiest times of the year for trekking in Nepal.

Reviews of Annapurna Circuit with Nar Phu Valley Trek by Past Trekkers

The quieter side of the Annapurna Circuit

We wanted something more adventurous than a standard trek, but without spending the whole trip in a heavily crowded area, the combination of the Annapurna Circuit and the remote Nar Phu Valley struck the right balance between classic Himalayan scenery and villages that see far fewer visitors. Before the trek, we had a meeting with the CEO of Majestic Trails Nepal, who answered all our doubts directly, and we were nervous beforehand, travelling as two women into such remote terrain wasn't something we took lightly. That nervousness didn't last long once things got underway. We were met at the airport in Kathmandu, and our guide Shiva turned out to be cheerful and full of energy the entire way, which made a real difference on the harder days. He checked in with us regularly without ever making it feel like pressure, explaining what was coming the next day and reminding us to keep a comfortable pace as we gained altitude. Some of the higher sections were tougher than we'd anticipated, and we slowed down and took more breaks than usual — he was completely fine with that. Nar Phu itself felt like a different trek entirely, long, quiet stretches through mountain landscape, with Nar and Phu villages being some of the most memorable parts of the trip. Accommodation got simpler further in, and the food was basic but exactly what you want after a full day of walking. Crossing Thorong La was the hardest physical day, but standing at the pass together afterward summed up the whole trip. After we finished, the company followed up with us for feedback, which felt like they genuinely wanted to know how it went rather than just moving on to the next group. Between Shiva, the planning, and how well organized the whole thing felt, we'd say this is one of the better companies out there for female trekkers specifically, and we'd come back and recommend it to other women and trekkers generally.

A family trek that turned into a shared achievement

We wanted a family adventure that went beyond sightseeing, and combining the well-known Annapurna Circuit with the more remote Nar Phu Valley gave us both dramatic mountain scenery and a real look at traditional Himalayan village life. Planning as a family meant a lot of questions up front — walking distances, accommodation, altitude, what to pack — and getting those answered clearly beforehand made us far more comfortable about the trip ahead. We didn't all walk at the same pace, and that turned out to be fine. Some days one of us would be ahead while another needed more time, and we were never pushed to move as a single unit. Our guide, Sujan, paid attention to everyone rather than only the strongest walkers, checking in regularly and explaining what each next section would involve. We also had an assistant guide, Hari, along with two porters, Ram and Krishna, and having that many hands on deck made a noticeable difference once we reached higher elevation and things got more demanding. Accommodation grew more basic the further into the valley we went, but the evenings in the tea houses, eating simple warm meals together after a long day outside, became part of what we liked about the trip. There were hard days where everyone was tired, but taking them section by section rather than treating them as setbacks turned those moments into some of our favorite stories afterward. Standing together at one of the trek's major high points, after so many days of walking and staying together, felt like something the whole family had earned. For another family considering this: understand it's a real mountain trek, not a casual holiday, and build in enough time to adjust your pace as a group.

Long days, a lot of laughing, one big pass

The four of us wanted something properly adventurous, and pairing the Annapurna Circuit with Nar Phu Valley won out over the other options we'd looked at. Organizing everything from Australia beforehand — itinerary, transport, accommodation, gear — meant that once we landed, we could just focus on getting ready to walk rather than sorting logistics. Our guide was Bibek Dhamala, who's actually the founder of the company — this was the second time one of us had trekked with him specifically, which said something about the kind of experience we were expecting. He wasn't just walking ahead of us — he'd explain what we were looking at and talk about the villages and local way of life along the way, which made the walking feel more connected to the place rather than just a march to the next lodge. Our porters, Rajesh and Bikash, kept things moving smoothly the whole way. Nar Phu was noticeably quieter and more remote than the main circuit sections, with a different character to the villages and landscape. Altitude hit the four of us differently — one person breezed along while another needed to slow right down, and we learned fast there was no point comparing ourselves to each other. Some of the longer, higher days were genuinely tough, and we got through them with patience, food, plenty of breaks, and the usual jokes between old friends. The tea house evenings were a highlight in their own right — sitting together, eating something warm, talking through the day. Reaching Thorong La together after all those days was the obvious high point, and Nar Phu's scenery was unlike anything we get back home. Our advice for other groups: train beforehand, don't underestimate the altitude, and go with people you actually enjoy spending long days with, the hard parts get a lot easier when you can laugh about them together.

Frequently Asked Questions About Annapurna Circuit with Nar Phu Valley Trek

General Information

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is a 16-day restricted-area trek in Nepal's Manang district that explores two ancient Tibetan Buddhist villages hidden in a remote valley north of the Annapurna Circuit. It combines desert-like Mustang landscapes with genuine Tibetan Buddhist culture and crosses two high passes above 5,000m.

16 days total for the combined Annapurna Circuit with Nar Phu Valley Trek. Majestic Trails Nepal also offers a 12-day Nar Phu Valley only trek for those with less time.

Strenuous. Rated harder than Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp due to two 5,000m+ passes (Kang La 5,320m and Thorong La 5,416m) and remote terrain with basic teahouse facilities.

Weather and Best Time

October and April are the best months. October offers the clearest post-monsoon skies. April offers spring rhododendron blooms with stable weather.

Itinerary and Route Details

It feels like Upper Mustang but with far fewer trekkers. Nar Phu offers similar desert-like Tibetan Buddhist landscapes without the growing crowds of Mustang. It beats Manaslu Circuit for genuine off-the-beaten-path experience — you can trek for hours without seeing another group.

Nar Phu is quieter than Manaslu Circuit. Both are restricted-area treks with Tibetan Buddhist culture. Manaslu Circuit is becoming increasingly popular each season. Nar Phu remains genuinely remote. Majestic Trails Nepal recommends Nar Phu for trekkers who want the Manaslu-style experience without the crowds.

Both are similar in landscape, but Nar Phu is significantly cheaper. Upper Mustang permit costs USD 500 for first 10 days. Nar Phu permit is USD 100 for the first week. Upper Mustang is easier (maximum altitude 3,840m). Nar Phu is harder (crosses 5,320m Kang La Pass).

Yes. Nar Phu is harder than EBC due to higher passes (5,320m Kang La vs 5,545m Kala Patthar viewpoint), more remote terrain, basic teahouses in Nar and Phu villages, and longer trekking days.
