Overview Of Annapurna Circuit Short Trek

The Annapurna Circuit Short Trek offers an exhilarating journey through the heart of the Himalayas, combining rugged mountain landscapes with rich cultural experiences. This trek is ideal for adventurers who want to experience the grandeur of the Annapurna region in a shorter time frame without missing its iconic highlights.

The 9-day Annapurna Circuit Short Trek takes you up to the challenging Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters, offering panoramic views of towering peaks including Annapurna IV, Tilicho Peak, and Gangapurna. Along the way, you will pass through diverse terrains, from terraced fields and rhododendron forests to high alpine deserts and sacred temples.

The trek begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Upper Pisang, a picturesque village nestled at 3,300 meters. This high-altitude start provides immediate access to breathtaking views of Annapurna II and Pisang Peak. From Upper Pisang, you trek to the traditional mountain town of Manang (3,540m), known for its Tibetan culture and stunning scenery.

On the third day, an acclimatization hike to either Ice Lake or Gangapurna Lake allows you to adjust to the altitude while soaking in pristine alpine views. The following days take you higher, as you trek through Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi, preparing for the demanding crossing of Thorong La Pass.

Crossing Thorong La Pass on day six is the trek’s highlight — a challenging yet rewarding ascent to 5,416 meters that offers unmatched panoramic vistas of the surrounding Himalayan giants. After the pass, you descend to Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site revered by both Hindus and Buddhists, where the spiritual atmosphere is enhanced by spectacular mountain views.

From Muktinath, a jeep ride through the scenic Kali Gandaki Gorge brings you to Pokhara, a serene city known for its tranquil Phewa Lake and stunning mountain backdrop. Finally, you return to Kathmandu by road or flight, concluding your unforgettable Himalayan adventure.

If you’re short on time, consider the scenic Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek or the off-the-beaten Mardi Himal Trek as excellent alternatives for high mountain views in fewer days.

From Upper Pisang, you can choose between two trails to reach Manang. The lower route via Humde is easier, mostly flat, and takes about 5–6 hours, but offers limited views. The upper route via Ghyaru and Ngawal is more demanding, around 7–8 hours, but far more scenic, with sweeping mountain vistas and charming old stone villages. For those with good fitness, we recommend the upper trail. You’ll arrive in Manang by late afternoon for a warm meal and rest

Today is an important acclimatization day to help your body adjust to the high altitude. You’ll have the option to hike to the breathtaking Ice Lake (around 4,600 meters) and Gangapurna Lake (approximately 3,900 meters). These side hikes offer stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and glaciers while supporting your body’s adaptation to thinner air. Taking this day to rest and explore ensures you’re well-prepared and energized for the challenging days ahead on the Annapurna Circuit Short Trek.

The trail climbs steadily into alpine terrain with wide-open views and chances to spot blue sheep or grazing yaks. After about 4–5 hours, we reach Yak Kharka by lunchtime. Don’t miss the dal bhat here — it’s famously perfect for refueling. You’ll also have time for a light side hike around the valley to support acclimatization.

Our guides, who have led this route dozens of times, recommend arriving early to allow your body more time to adjust to the altitude. Based on our field experience, gentle walks around Yak Kharka in the afternoon significantly improve acclimatization and reduce the risk of altitude-related issues.

Today’s trek is short but steeper, gaining altitude quickly. Our original plan is to stay at Thorong Phedi (4,540m), where you’ll likely sleep better due to the slightly lower elevation. However, if you're feeling strong and well-acclimatized, your guide may suggest continuing up to High Camp (4,800m). Staying at High Camp makes the next day's Thorong La Pass crossing shorter and more manageable.

Our guides assess your condition carefully based on years of experience leading high-altitude treks. While sleeping at Phedi ensures better rest, pushing to High Camp can give you a strategic advantage on summit day — especially in colder or windier seasons.

From the stone houses of Upper Pisang to the monasteries of Manang, you’ll witness unique traditions and warm hospitality. Local cuisine like dal bhat, momos, thukpa, and yak cheese keeps trekkers energized and connected to the region. Our guides help you explore the cultural richness by sharing stories and suggesting authentic foods along the trail.

Before and after the trek, you’ll stay in comfortable 3-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara. During the trek, we arrange private rooms in selected tea houses with attached bathrooms where available. At higher altitudes like Thorong Phedi, facilities are simpler, but clean and well-maintained. Our team ensures that each place is hygienic and suitable for a good night’s rest after a long day of trekking.

To trek the Annapurna Circuit, you need two permits:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

These permits help ensure safety, manage visitor flow, and support local conservation. Majestic Trails Nepal handles all permit arrangements on your behalf, so you can focus on the adventure, not the paperwork.

The best times to do the Annapurna Circuit Short Trek are:

  • Spring (March–May)
  • Autumn (September–November)

These seasons offer clear skies, stable weather, and vibrant landscapes. While winter brings snow and cold conditions at high altitudes, summer (June–August) is monsoon season with heavy rainfall. For optimal conditions, we recommend trekking in spring or autumn.

Unforgettable Journey with Expert Guidance

I completed the Annapurna Circuit short trek last month, and it was absolutely incredible. The whole experience was well planned, and our guide, Tashi, was fantastic—knowledgeable, friendly, and always attentive to the group’s needs. The trail offered amazing mountain views, local culture, and just the right amount of challenge for a short trek. The accommodations were comfortable, with private rooms almost every night, which made a big difference after long days of hiking. I highly recommend this trek for anyone wanting a Himalayan adventure but with limited time.

Great Trek, Perfect Pace, Amazing Guide

The Annapurna Circuit short trek was my first high-altitude trek, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Our guide, Mingma, took care of every detail, from pacing us well for acclimatization to sharing stories about the local culture. The itinerary was well balanced, including an acclimatization day and some fantastic side hikes like Gangapurna Lake. The scenery was breathtaking at every turn, and the lodges were clean and comfortable. This trek gave me a taste of the Annapurna region’s best without needing weeks off work. I’d definitely recommend it!

Short but Complete Himalayan Adventure

I chose the Annapurna circuit short trek because I wanted an intense but manageable experience. Our guide, Dorje, was excellent—he made sure we were safe, motivated, and informed throughout the trek. The trail was a mix of beautiful villages, rugged mountain terrain, and stunning views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. We stayed mostly in private rooms with attached bathrooms, which was a nice comfort. Crossing Thorong La Pass was challenging but totally worth it. The cultural encounters, especially in Manang and Muktinath, added so much depth to the journey. I’d say this trek is perfect for anyone wanting a Himalayan experience in a short time.
