Fitness and Difficulty

Langtang is rated moderate — it's genuinely accessible for first-timers who are reasonably active. You'll walk 5–7 hours a day on well-marked trails with gradual altitude gain. The trickiest day is the optional climb to Tserko Ri (4,984m), which is steeper and longer. If you hike, jog, or cycle regularly, you'll be well prepared.

No prior trekking experience is required, but you should be comfortable walking 12–15 km a day over uneven terrain. The trail involves stone-paved sections, forest paths, and some steep staircases. People who walk or exercise regularly a few times a week typically handle it very well. A few weeks of cardio training before you arrive helps enormously.

You need a base level of cardiovascular fitness — you don't need to be an athlete, but you should be able to walk uphill for several hours without stopping. Stair climbing, hiking with a loaded daypack, and regular cardio training for 4–6 weeks before your trip will make a real difference, especially for summit days at Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri.

Absolutely. We've led many trekkers in their 60s and even early 70s through Langtang. The key is a relaxed pace, proper acclimatization time, and honest communication with your guide. Itinerary and Route Details

Yes, it's one of the more family-friendly options in Nepal. Kids who are comfortable hiking can manage the trail well. We recommend the standard 7–8 day itinerary for families so rest days are built in. Younger children (under 10) can be carried by a porter on harder sections — something our team is fully equipped to arrange.

The typical itinerary runs 7–8 days: Day 1 — Drive Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1,460m). Day 2 — Trek to Lama Hotel (2,470m). Day 3 — Trek to Langtang Village (3,430m). Day 4 — Trek to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m). Day 5 — Acclimatization/hike to Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri. Day 6 — Trek back to Lama Hotel. Day 7 — Trek to Syabrubesi. Day 8 — Drive back to Kathmandu.

The base trek reaches Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870m. If you do the optional summit hike, Tserko Ri tops out at around 4,984–5,033m, where you get a full 360° panorama of Langtang Lirung (7,227m), Langshisa Ri, Yala Peak, and even Shishapangma across the Tibetan border. It's one of the best viewpoints in the entire region.

The main trekking route covers roughly 75–80 km round trip from Syabrubesi, including the side hike to Kyanjin Ri. The daily distances range from 10–16 km depending on the section. It's a manageable distance spread across multiple days, which is what makes Langtang a great first Himalayan trekking experience.

Don't miss the rebuilt Langtang Village (a testament to resilience after 2015), the ancient Kyanjin Gompa monastery, the famous yak cheese factory, the Langtang Lirung glacier viewpoint, and the sunrise from Tserko Ri. The dense rhododendron forests between Syabrubesi and Lama Hotel — filled with wildlife including red pandas — are also genuinely spectacular.

Yes, Langtang connects beautifully with Gosainkunda Lake, the Tamang Heritage Trail, and the challenging Ganja La Pass crossing. Majestic Trails Nepal can customize any combination to suit your time and fitness level. If you have 12–14 days, the Gosainkunda extension is a spiritual and scenic highlight that few trekkers experience.

Hot showers are available at most teahouses for a small fee (roughly $2–3). Toilets range from Western-style to squat, often outside the main building. At higher elevations, you may encounter basic facilities. It's all part of the mountain experience — and honestly, after a long day of trekking, any shower feels like a luxury.

Accommodation and Meals

You'll stay in teahouses — family-run guesthouses that are simple but comfortable. Rooms are typically twin-sharing with foam mattresses and blankets. At lower elevations like Lama Hotel, rooms are warmer and facilities better. At Kyanjin Gompa, rooms are basic but adequate. Majestic Trails Nepal selects teahouses with clean facilities and good kitchen hygiene.

Teahouse menus are more varied than people expect — dal bhat (lentil rice), noodles, pasta, fried rice, soups, porridge, pancakes, and local bread are all common. Dal bhat is always the safest and most nutritious choice at altitude. Majestic Trails Nepal guides know which kitchens maintain good hygiene, and we always advise on safe eating at altitude.

Absolutely. Vegetarian food is the norm on this trail — rice, lentils, vegetables, eggs, and noodles are widely available. Vegan options require a bit more planning but are manageable at most stops. Let our team know your dietary needs in advance and your guide will communicate clearly with each teahouse along the route.

Permits and Required Documents

You need One permits: the Langtang National Park Entry Permit (NPR 3,000 for foreigners). Can be obtained in Kathmandu at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Pradarshani Marg, or at the Dhunche checkpoint — though getting them in Kathmandu before departure is far smoother.

We handle all permit arrangements as part of your package — it's one less thing to stress about. We collect your passport copies and photos in advance and process everything before your trek begins. Just bring 2 passport-sized photos and a copy of your passport to Kathmandu, and our team takes care of the rest.

Most nationalities can obtain a Nepal tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport — no advance visa required. You'll need your passport (valid 6+ months), a passport photo, and the visa fee in cash (USD $30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days). For the trek itself, carry your passport and permit documents at all times as there are multiple checkposts on the trail.
