The Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek is one of Nepal’s most spectacular and rewarding trekking adventures. Spanning 14 days, this trek takes you far beyond the typical Everest Base Camp trail, immersing you in some of the most pristine and awe-inspiring landscapes the Himalayas have to offer. It blends serene turquoise lakes, remote Sherpa villages, towering glaciers, and the thrill of crossing the challenging Renjo La Pass (5,360 meters)—one of the iconic high passes in the Everest region.
What sets this trek apart is its perfect balance of natural grandeur and cultural richness. You’ll discover the tranquil Gokyo Lakes, considered sacred by locals, and witness spectacular panoramic views from Gokyo Ri and the Renjo La Pass summit, offering some of the clearest, most sweeping views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. This trek is an ideal choice for those seeking a quieter, less crowded Himalayan experience while still enjoying world-class mountain vistas.
The journey also takes you through vibrant Sherpa communities such as Namche Bazaar, Thame, and Lunden, where you can experience authentic Himalayan culture, ancient monasteries, and warm local hospitality. Throughout the trek, you will be guided by experienced local Sherpa guides from Majestic Trails Nepal, who bring invaluable knowledge of the terrain, culture, and safety, ensuring your adventure is not only unforgettable but also secure and comfortable.
The trek’s altitude profile varies from 1,400 meters in Kathmandu to over 5,300 meters at Renjo La Pass, making proper acclimatization critical. The trail includes moderate to challenging trekking sections, with steep ascents like the Renjo La Pass climb and rewarding descents through lush valleys.
Compared to the popular Everest Base Camp Trek, the Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek offers a more remote and serene experience with fewer trekkers on the trail, letting you immerse yourself fully in the Himalayan wilderness. Along the way, you’ll pass by giant glaciers such as the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal, and walk beside pristine lakes reflecting the towering mountains.
This trek is perfect for adventurous trekkers who want to combine physical challenge with spectacular natural beauty and cultural discovery. The local Sherpa guides from Majestic Trails Nepal ensure you have an authentic and safe trekking experience, sharing their deep knowledge of the region’s geography, weather patterns, and cultural heritage.
If you are considering extending your journey or exploring alternate Everest region treks, we recommend checking out our Everest Base Camp Trek, which offers the classic route to Everest’s doorstep, or the Everest Panorama Trek, a shorter, less strenuous option with stunning views.

We highly recommend adding 2 or more extra days as spare time in your itinerary. Flights to and from Lukla are often subject to delays or cancellations due to unpredictable weather conditions. Having additional days built into your schedule ensures you won’t miss your international flight from Kathmandu.
Please be aware that there is a high chance of flight delays or cancellations at Lukla airport. Our team will keep you informed promptly about any changes, and we will do our best to assist you in adjusting your plans accordingly.
Preparing for these possibilities will help make your trek smoother and stress-free.
Your Himalayan journey begins the moment you land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. As you exit the terminal, our friendly Majestic Trails Nepal team will be waiting with a warm greeting and a traditional Nepali khada scarf.
You’ll be transferred in a private vehicle to your hotel in Thamel, Kathmandu’s vibrant tourist hub. After check-in, unwind or explore the bustling streets lined with trekking shops, cafés, and ancient temples. In the evening, we’ll host a short pre-trek briefing to prepare you for your Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek adventure ahead.
Early morning, we transfer to the airport for a thrilling flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. The 35-minute scenic flight offers a bird’s-eye view of the Himalayan giants, setting the tone for the journey.
Upon landing at Lukla’s short mountain airstrip (considered one of the most exciting in the world), we meet our local porters and begin our trek. The trail descends through pine forests, crossing suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River, until we reach the peaceful village of Phakding.
Today’s trek is filled with beauty and challenge. We follow the river northward, entering Sagarmatha National Park, where our permits are checked. The trail becomes more demanding as we ascend through pine and rhododendron forests, cross multiple suspension bridges—including the famous Hillary Bridge—and begin the long uphill push to Namche Bazaar.
As we climb higher, we catch our first glimpse of Mount Everest—a magical moment for every trekker. Namche, the Sherpa capital, is a vibrant town perched in a natural amphitheater surrounded by snow-capped peaks.
Acclimatization is crucial for success on high-altitude treks like the Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass trek. We spend the day hiking to the Everest View Hotel, where panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku reward your effort.
We then descend back to Namche, stopping at the Sherpa Museum and local bakeries for a relaxing afternoon. This day helps our bodies adjust to the altitude and strengthens us for the journey ahead.
Leaving the classic Everest Base Camp trail, we veer northwest toward Gokyo Valley—a quieter and more pristine path. The trail climbs past rhododendron forests and yak pastures as we ascend above the tree line.
You’ll pass the villages of Kyangjuma and Mong La, with breathtaking views of Thamserku and Khumbila. The serene atmosphere and thinner crowds make this day special. By the time we reach Dole, you’ll already feel the solitude of the high Himalayas.
As the sun rises over the Dole valley, we begin today’s journey with a steady climb above the tree line. The scenery transforms into an alpine wonderland—no more forests now, just open landscapes, vast hillsides covered in moss and juniper, and crisp mountain air.
The trail is relatively gentle at first but gradually ascends alongside the Dudh Koshi River. Along the way, we’ll pass yak pastures and stone-built tea houses. Small alpine settlements like Lhabarma and Luza dot the trail, offering stunning views of Cho Oyu (8,188m)—the world’s sixth-highest mountain, standing majestically in the distance.
As we move higher, the air becomes thinner. But this region is serene and quiet, far from the crowded Everest Base Camp route. Here, it’s just you, your breath, and the mountains. You’ll often see Himalayan tahr grazing on high cliffs, and if you’re lucky, perhaps even a lammergeier circling above.
We arrive in Machherma, a peaceful, wind-swept village nestled at the base of a steep hill. A short walk around the ridge offers expansive views of Kantega and Thamserku peaks. This is also an important place for acclimatization. Hydration and rest are key.
Today’s trail is truly magical as we head deeper into the heart of the Gokyo Valley. Leaving Machherma, we ascend through rocky terrain, high above the river. Gradually, the landscape becomes more dramatic—glaciers, towering ridgelines, and glacial moraines come into view.
We first pass the first Gokyo Lake (Longponga Tsho)—a mesmerizing turquoise pool reflecting the sky. Shortly after, we reach the second lake (Taujung Tsho), surrounded by desolate, icy hills. The moment you see the third lake, Dudh Pokhari, you’ll understand why this place is so sacred. Set against the backdrop of Cho Oyu, the lake is absolutely breathtaking.
Right beside the lake lies Gokyo village, a quaint settlement of stone lodges and cozy teahouses perched at nearly 5,000 meters. The silence here is powerful—you can only hear the wind and the occasional clinking of yak bells.
In the afternoon, you can wander along the lake’s edge or simply rest and soak in the view. The beauty of this place is surreal. Few places on earth combine serenity and scale like this.
This morning is one of the biggest highlights of your Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek. We rise before dawn and begin the steep, challenging climb to the summit of Gokyo Ri (5,483m)—one of the most stunning viewpoints in all of Nepal.
As the sun slowly lights up the sky, you’ll witness a 360° panorama of the Himalayan giants: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Taboche, and more. Below lies the shimmering Gokyo Lakes and the immense Ngozumpa Glacier—the longest glacier in the Himalayas.
The wind is cold, the climb is tough, but the reward is beyond imagination. It’s a deeply emotional moment for many trekkers—standing among giants, far from the noise of the world.
We descend slowly back to Gokyo for a warm breakfast and a well-deserved rest. Spend the afternoon relaxing and preparing for tomorrow’s big day: Renjo La Pass.
This is the most adventurous day of the trek. After breakfast, we start early to cross the majestic Renjo La Pass, which towers at 5,360 meters. The climb is steep, with stone steps and switchbacks gradually taking us above the Gokyo Valley. As you rise, the views become increasingly stunning—this is the heart of the Renjo La Pass map and itinerary.
At the top of the pass, fluttering prayer flags greet you. The entire Everest range, including Makalu, Cho Oyu, and the trail we walked from Gokyo, stretches before your eyes. It’s a dreamlike panorama that makes every step worth it.
From the top, the descent is a bit steep initially, but the trail gradually eases as we make our way into the remote Bhote Koshi Valley. This area feels less explored, wilder, and untouched. We reach Lunden, a small and peaceful Sherpa village surrounded by yak pastures and rolling hills.
From Lunden, the trail continues through the dramatic and underexplored Thame Valley—a region steeped in Sherpa heritage. Unlike the busier trails, this area is blissfully quiet. You’ll pass through stone-walled fields, ancient mani walls, and traditional villages that seem unchanged for centuries.
By midday, we arrive in Thame, a significant cultural site and the home village of world-famous climbers like Tenzing Norgay and Apa Sherpa. Thame is also home to one of the oldest monasteries in the Khumbu, perched high on a rocky slope. This is also the hometown of many famous Sherpas, including Apa Sherpa, who climbed Everest 21 times!
You’ll feel the energy of Sherpa history here—calm, spiritual, and enduring.
After breakfast, we follow a beautiful forested trail and reconnect with the main Everest trail near Namche. The trail is easier now, and you’ll notice the return of trekkers from other routes like Everest Panorama Trek or even those going toward Everest Base Camp.
Upon reaching Namche Bazaar, it feels almost like coming home. You can enjoy a hot shower, recharge your devices, and maybe grab a fresh coffee or bakery snack.
We descend the same familiar route through pine forests, crossing the suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River. There’s time for reflection and celebration as we reach Lukla, the gateway to the Khumbu.
In the evening, we’ll have a small farewell dinner with our trekking crew and reflect on the accomplishment of completing the Gokyo to Renjo La Pass journey.
Depending on flight availability, we either take a 35-minute scenic flight from Lukla to Kathmandu or a short hop to Ramechhap, followed by a 5–6 hour drive to the city. Once back in Kathmandu, check into your hotel and enjoy the comforts of the capital.
Later in the afternoon or evening, the owner of Majestic Trails Nepal will personally meet you to hear about your trekking experience, collect your feedback, and share a warm token of appreciation for completing this high-altitude Himalayan journey.
You’ll have the rest of the day free for a relaxing shower, souvenir shopping in Thamel, or sipping a celebratory drink in one of Kathmandu’s lively rooftop cafés.
Depending on your international flight schedule, we will arrange a timely airport transfer from your hotel. One of our team members will accompany you to Tribhuvan International Airport and assist with check-in if needed.
If you're not ready to leave just yet, Majestic Trails Nepal can gladly arrange additional nights' stay, a cultural sightseeing tour, or short nature escapes around the Kathmandu Valley. Whether it's Patan, Bhaktapur, or Nagarkot sunrise, we’re happy to help extend your adventure.
We thank you for choosing us as your local partner in the Himalayas and hope to see you again on a future trek or tour in Nepal.
The best time to trek Renjo La Pass is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (mid-September to November) seasons. These months offer clear skies, stable weather, and breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks like Everest, Cho Oyu, and Makalu. The temperature is moderate during the day, and the trails are dry and ideal for high-altitude trekking.
Spring is known for blooming rhododendrons and lush greenery across the lower valleys, while autumn provides the clearest Himalayan views with crisp mountain air and vibrant cultural celebrations like Dashain and Tihar.
While December to February is also possible for experienced trekkers, expect frigid temperatures and possible snow closures at the high passes. Monsoon season (June to early September) is the least recommended due to heavy rain, leeches in the lower trail sections, and reduced visibility.
Renjo La Pass is located in the Khumbu region of Nepal, within the boundaries of Sagarmatha National Park, northeast of Namche Bazaar. The pass sits at an elevation of 5,360 meters (17,585 ft) and connects Gokyo Valley to the remote Thame Valley near the Tibetan border.
This stunning high pass offers panoramic views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and the sacred Gokyo Lakes, making it one of the most scenic passes in the Everest region. It's a vital part of the famous Three Passes Trek, but is also perfect as a standalone circuit with Gokyo.
The Renjo La Pass trek is considered moderately challenging to difficult, depending on your fitness level and prior altitude experience. The trail involves long uphill climbs, rocky paths, glacier crossings, and high-altitude conditions.
You’ll trek up to 5,360 meters, so acclimatization days are essential. We design our itinerary to allow proper altitude adjustment, including two nights in Namche Bazaar before gaining elevation. While no technical climbing skills are required, trekkers should be in good physical condition and prepared for daily walks of 5 to 7 hours.
With our expert local guides from Majestic Trails Nepal, porters, and support, the trek is safe and highly rewarding even for first-time high-altitude hikers with strong determination.
Acclimatization During the Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek
Acclimatization is a critical component of the Gokyo and Renjo La Pass trek due to the high altitude of Renjo La Pass (5,360 meters). Rapid ascent without proper adjustment can lead to altitude sickness, which is why we’ve built in strategic rest days, especially in Namche Bazaar (3,440m).
At Namche, you’ll spend two nights to allow your body to adapt while exploring Everest View Hotel and the Sherpa Museum. This minimizes the risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) and gives you the strength to climb further towards Gokyo Valley and eventually cross Renjo La Pass safely.
Our guides monitor your health closely throughout the trek, and we encourage you to stay hydrated, eat well, and communicate if you feel unwell at any point.
Weather by Altitude on the Renjo La Pass Trek
Weather conditions can vary drastically depending on altitude and season. Here’s what to expect on your journey through the Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass trek:
